"Is modern technology a form of control over people and their lives or a means of liberation?
The control of people with the help of modern technology is a very controversial theme.
Some weeks before, the so-called Constitutional Court decided that the access and control of private computers from others is unconstitutional. I am of exactly the same opinion as the Constitutional Court, because it represents a hard intervention into the privacy of the people. To my mind, this argument is very strong and we shouldn’t accept that because it contravenes against Germany's constitution.
There was a similar case: The "German Bundestag" adjudicated in an election that in 2008 the information about telephones, mobile phones and e-mails will be saved for six month. I would like to question the view that the state should control every person who lives in Germany, because you can see it as a general suspicion. A further argument I would like to present is that the data retention puts a financial strain both on businesses and consumers. Data retention violates the human right to privacy and informational self-determination. That is the reason because more than 30.000 people send a “class-action law suit” against the data retention to the Constitutional Court. The data retention was partly suspended by Constitutional Court. Only the police are allowed to save such information for solving a crime.
Personally I would not go so far as to say that modern technology is only a form of control, because the saved information helps the police to find out who committed a murder or similar crimes.
Considering all these arguments, I think that the control with the help of modern technology is sufficient to protect Germany against terroristic or criminal acts. But it is not a secret that the control of people will increase in future."
